Chapters

Local by design, federated by intent

Kalman Commons operates like a federated chapter network — inspired by the strengths of Toastmasters-style local clubs. Each approved venue can host a recurring weekly gathering for its electorate or suburb. We begin in New South Wales and grow outward, classified by jurisdiction.

How chapters work

Organised by electorate and suburb

A chapter belongs to a place. Members find the gathering nearest to them; hosts keep it recurring and autonomous.

One place, one rhythm

Each chapter is anchored to an electorate or suburb and meets weekly at a preapproved venue, following the shared evening format.

Autonomous hosts

Volunteer hosts run gatherings under the code, with or without the founder present. Roles rotate so no single person carries the chapter.

Aggregate, not personal

Decisions about region, venue, date, and any optional cigar demand are computed from anonymous, aggregate member input — never individual profiles.

Compliant by default

Every chapter confirms an alcohol-free setting, 25+ membership with age verification, and lawful, venue-approved arrangements before it opens.

New South Wales first

Anchor cities and early regions

The NSW pilot starts in anchor locations, then extends to regional centres as hosts and venues are approved.

Greater Sydney

Inner, western, and northern electorates — e.g. Parramatta, Sydney, North Sydney, Penrith.

Newcastle & Hunter

Newcastle and surrounding electorates and suburbs.

Illawarra

Wollongong and the broader Illawarra region.

Central Coast

Gosford and surrounding suburbs.

Regional NSW

Selected regional centres as local hosts and venues come forward.

Your electorate

Not listed? A chapter can begin anywhere a host, a venue, and a handful of members agree to meet.

Chapter locations open only when a host, a preapproved venue, and a local compliance check are all in place.

Expansion

State by state, then international

Growth is deliberate. Each new state or territory gets its own compliance checklist before chapters open.

1 · New South Wales

The founding pilot — Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, and beyond.

2 · Other states & territories

VIC, QLD, SA, WA, TAS, ACT, NT — each with its own state compliance rules.

3 · International

In time, chapters abroad — each classified and governed by its own jurisdiction.

Classified by jurisdiction

Local law leads

Every chapter is classified by its jurisdiction — state or territory within Australia, and country once international. Each jurisdiction carries its own compliance checklist covering alcohol-free operation, age verification (25+), and where any lawful, optional, adult-only cigar activity may occur. A chapter does not open until its jurisdiction's checklist is satisfied.

Start a chapter

Bring Kalman Commons to your suburb

If you can gather a few civil adults, find a respectful alcohol-free venue, and host a calm weekly evening, you can start a chapter. Begin by joining as a member and telling us your suburb and electorate — or offer a venue.
